Mr. Detwiler began his career in 1968 in the engineering, sales, and marketing of new medical equipment and later started a business re-furbishing medical systems, incorporating new high-technology devices in the process. He developed an expertise in x-ray and nuclear medicine equipment in particular, in which he became skilled at buying, selling, and re-manufacturing. Over the years, Mr. Detwiler gained a reputation as a “go-to” person with regard to pricing, life cycle analysis, and other specifics about current and advancing medical technology.

As time went by, Mr. Detwiler’s willingness to share his knowledge prompted frequent phone calls from other professionals including attorneys, IRS agents, lenders, and even other appraisers who were looking for information and advice about medical equipment and the state of technology. These calls became so frequent that one morning Mr. Detwiler came to the office frustrated with the amount of time he was spending on calls for free advice.

Some may say he woke up on the wrong side of bed that day, while others might say he was taking the bull by the horns. Either way, when the next phone call he received was someone fishing for more free advice, his response was “I’ll give you an answer, but I’m sending you an invoice in the mail. If you don’t pay it, don’t bother calling back.” To Mr. Detwiler’s delight, a check was forthcoming, and this was followed by more conversations and invoices. He achieved the status of Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) with the American Society of Appraisers in 1991, and is also a Commercial Arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association and an Associate Member of the American Bar Association.
